Saving the Black Cats

In most places, black cats are shunned because of their appearance. Here I’ll explain why, and how to help.

Legends of the Black Kitty Cats

Way back, cats were worshipped in Ancient Egypt, and soon in other places of the world cats were loved. But then later, when stories of witches and black magic were told, cats weren’t as loved. People made up stories of witches with familiars, which were almost always black cats. So people started killing all black cats in sight, and black cats were known as bad luck. Luckily, after that dark time was over, cats were soon the most famous of all again. But people still made connections with witches and black cats, saying that black cats were actually witches or devils in disguise, because why else were they black if not because of black magic? The truth is that black cats had certain genes that made their fur black, or that they had a pigment called melanism, which makes their fur look black. (But back then people were too stubborn to understand this). Even today, black cats are usually avoided and the last to get adopted, resulting in them getting euthanized.

How to Help

There are many ways to help. The best way is to adopt a black cat if you see one in a shelter, like me. If you can’t do that, try fostering a cat, so at least they won’t get killed, although take note that it will probably take a while to find someone willing to adopt one. If you can’t do any of those two things, then you could contact someone who could, start expressing the joy of black cats in many ways, or start making them seem innocent animals that deserve to get adopted. (Which they are) Well, I hope you decide to help save the lives of many black cats!

Cat Nightmare?

Last time I talked about the cats’ problem of overpopulation, I focused on the whole world. But there’s one place where this problem is working its worst.

The Japanese Cat Islands

Apparently Japan has 11 cat islands. What’s a cat island? It’s an island filled with cats. It’s also a popular tourist attraction for cat lovers. But more than half of all the cats there need medical attention. This problem was first discovered by cat activist Hannah Shaw, also known as Kitten Lady. Yeah, she visited a cat island. Anyways, she noticed that all cats were hurt in some way. Most cats were also not neutered or spayed, so every year the cat populations always grew.  Most kittens had upper respiratory infections. The cats were also injured on the outside, from getting into fight with other cats. Some cats were overweight from being fed too much, others underweight from being ignored. The cats were suffering, and everyone was ignoring it.

How to Help

The best way to help is to start a program helping cats. You could hire veterinarians, do TNR, and get people to adopt the young kittens under fourteen weeks of age. If that’s too much, you could volunteer in the TNR program in one of the cat islands. If you can’t do anything, notify someone who can. The most important thing is that you NEVER euthanize a cat. This is a cruel thing to do and you’ll find you regretted doing that. There’s no going back, all we can do is wait for the cats to die on their own and the cat populations to calm down. Well, I hope you decide to help these poor cats.

World of Cats

If you live on a calm street with other houses, it’s likely that you’ve seen at least one cat around that area. But that cat is part of millions of cats, feral and stray, roaming the  streets. These cats may be suffering in many ways, and we have to help.

Problems of Kitty World

Every cat lover should know that a cat’s biggest problem is the fact that they’re overpopulated. Just in America, millions of people own cats. But the cats living outside outnumber pet cats by more than six. The outside cats might be suffering from different things. Sickness, starvation, and injuries are just the main causes.

Now, I know you’re thinking about how proud you are of yourself because you always feed the feral cats living outside. Sorry about this, but you’re actually making it worse. Yes, by feeding the cats you’re taking out the problem of starvation, but…you’re increasing the number of cats. When you feed the cats they become healthier (which is good), but then start breeding (which is bad). If you’re one of those very busy or just casual people then you’ve probably never thought of TNR. TNR is just an operation made to the cat so it can’t have kittens or, if male, can’t mate. Along with this the cat is given vaccinations and has their ear tip removed to indicate the cat was neutered. By feeding a cat that’s not neutered you’re just giving the cat resources they needs to reproduce. But, now let’s move on!

 How to Help

The most obvious thing to do is TNR. But, there are other ways. If you don’t have the time or money to do TNR then you could contact a friend that does. If you can’t (or won’t) do any of those things, then at least do this: If you’ve seen that a cat has had kittens then try to put the kittens in a cat carrier and bring them to an animal shelter so they can eventually get adopted, or so you can adopt them yourself properly. But remember, if the cat is more than 14 weeks than it’s too late and the cat won’t be able to be comfortable around people. That means that the cat will either be killed or end up living in the animal shelter. If the cat had kittens and you want to do TNR, when you bring the cat to the hospital also bring the kittens and then explain the situation. Well, hopefully you decide to do something about the feral cat that’s always gobbling up food everyday and giving birth to kittens.

Are Cats Loners?…

Most people consider cats loners, or aloof. But… is that true?

The Truth

No, it’s not really true. But don’t leave yet, I’m not done. I consider cats loners as much as I consider dogs loners. Cats need their space, but that doesn’t mean cats don’t like attention. It’s an instinct. Cats are solitary animals. They almost never see another cat, apart from mating time. When they do meet another cat, the cats either fight or one gets scared away. Same thing goes when cats meet other animals that aren’t prey. The animals that could easily crush cats are usually stayed away from. So when cats encounter humans, domestic or not, it’s not rare that their first thought is run. Even affectionate cats still have their instincts, and sometimes they just need their alone time. But all these cats are domesticated, and need their humans. Even the shy or aggressive ones feel an urge to be with us. In fact, one of my cats called Shadow, is very shy. Yet we have a bond. Every night ( or every time I’m in bed ), Shadow would always jump onto my bed and fall asleep purring with me. My other cat Domino is very affectionate, yet even she sometimes needs her time alone. But both cats love me, and it’s staying that way.

My Short Conclusion

So now I hope you understand why cats aren’t loners. And remember, be sure to give your cat lot’s of attention, but also give them some privacy, and you’ll both be very happy!

A History of Cats’ Domestication

Cats were domesticated a bit earlier than you think. In this article I thought you like some info about how cats were domesticated. So, let’s begin!

Cats and People Introduced

Many people think cats and people first encountered each other because rodents were always trying to steal some grain. The cats would then swoop in and save the day by hunting down the rodents and eating them. Then, after many years of human interaction the cats would become domesticated.

However, another theory was introduced. Some people now think cats were attracted by trash left carelessly out in the open. The cats would salvage pieces of food and soon got used to the humans in the area. The people would also get used to the cats, and decided to take care of them. Feral cats are not easily adjusted to people, but if they had kittens, and the kittens were raised all their life by humans, the kittens would easily become very affectionate. But the people back then weren’t as smart. The feral cats would have their kittens raised outside. Only years later kittens started appearing in homes. When I say years, I mean thousands of years. Cats only then started to like always living in people’s homes. And I think that both of those rumors are true. After all, it is possible.

Feral VS Stray

You have to remember that feral cats are basically the cats before they were domesticated, except that the cats were african wild cats, not the normal feral cats. They usually have had little or no human contact.

Stray cats are very different. Stray cats are cats that were either abandoned by their owners or got lost and never found their way back, ending up in the wild. Usually they’re still used to humans, and their wild instincts aren’t as strong. I think the stray cats that survived gave birth to kittens. These kittens never had human contact ever since they were born, so they became feral.

Here’s an example: My cat Shadow was rescued by the animal shelter when she was about one and a half or two months. She is more shy than most cats because of this. Domino was born in Cameron Animal Shelter and had stayed there until we adopted her. She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Well, I hope you understood my explanation, which I think is very simple and short!

Tell The USDA To Stop Killing Cats!

USDA is killing innocent kitties for no good reason, and we have to do something. Today you will learn what else they’re doing wrong, and how to stop it!

The USDA Kitten Crimes

USDA is not only killing cats, they’re doing experiments on them! The first step in this horrid cycle is breeding the cats. They breed 100 cats annually. Next, they’re raising the cats up to two months and then feeding them raw meat with toxoplasmosis, which is then harvested from the cats’ feces and used for other experiments. Then the cats, which most are healthy and if not then could easily be cured, are killed.

A spokesperson from USDA says in defense, that ‘the cats could affect the pregnancies of many women if they come in contact with the cat.’ And yet the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention argues that the parasite could only be from the feces of cats a few weeks following the infection. So if USDA were to keep the cats for a few more weeks the families would be fine. The USDA spokesperson counters this pointing out that the parasite could last longer in the cats body than thought, and it could be reactivated later again.

So then Senior Vice President Gudrun Ravetz of the British Veterinary Association then says the chances of them happening is low, and that only people with weak immune systems are likely to get infected. He also says that if a person does have a weak immune system that they should follow NHS advice for precautionary measures. Ravetz also added more advice on how to minimize getting infected, like washing your hands thoroughly after cleaning the cat’s litter box. So in conclusion, USDA still has no good reason to be killing cats.

How To Help

So there. I’m pretty sure you’re ready to learn how to help. One way is by visiting https://www.whitecoatwaste.org/contact-congress/#/11. Just search that up and it should pop up. Once you’re on there you’re able to contact the congress and state how you think USDA are treating cats and dogs wrong. Another you could do there is to donate money to help stop this horror. If you’re want to help a different way, you could spread the word. How? By making videos, writing articles, or even telling people you know and could help. If my article didn’t help convince you, go visit Kitten Lady’s channel. She’s a cat activist and has made a very descriptive video about USDA. So that’s it, I hope you decide to help stop this…
