The Prehistoric Kitty Cat

There’s one feline that’s not around anymore, so get ready for an explosion of cat facts!

The Saber Tooth Tiger (Also called Smilodon)

The words saber tooth tiger take a bit long to write, so we’ll be calling them Sabers. Anyways, let’s start with food. Scientists think Sabers were at the top of the food chain, so it might have eaten anything it catched. It has short legs and scientists think this ment it killed its prey by ambushing it. Why did scientists think it ambushed prey because of Sabers’ legs? Well, short legs mean limited speed, and prey could be very fast. So the only efficient way to catch prey was by hiding, and then once it had a head start, it would LEAP at it! Scientists think they would bite it with their extra long teeth and wait until it bled to death. Sabers are carnivores, meaning they were meat eaters. Like I said before, its at the top of the food chain, so they ate any animal large enough to feed it.

It mostly ate bison (american buffalo), musk-oxen, ground sloths, american camels, prong oxen, tapirs, antelope, prehistoric horses (hipparionine horses), and mastodon (extinct hairy elephants). How do people know this? Scientists study all the fossils that were alive during the same period as Saber. The ones that were big enough to be considered food for Saber but not too big were probably the prey that were hunted by Sabers. Sabers lived in South America, in the western side of the Andes mountains, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador. In North America, they lived in Rancho La Brea in California. It is currently impossible to know the true color of Saber, but scientists think it’s a smooth sand color, like a lion. Well I think that’s enough for today! I hoped you liked learning about Saber!

Is Your Cat Overweight?

58 percent of cats are overweight just in the U.S, and what if your cat is one of them? In this article you’ll be learning how to prevent your cat from becoming overweight, and how to put a stop to it if your cat is already overweight!

FAT CATS!

There are so many fat cats. It may sound funny, but it isn’t. Most fat cats only live 12 to 15 years. Imagine, if that were your cat! It is possible, but can be prevented very easily. Well actually, it depends on what level of urgency you’re at. If you’re like “Eh, he’ll live.” Then you’re probably not willing to do this. But first, let’s see if your cat is overweight. An adult cat should weigh 7.9 to 9.9 lbs. That’s just the average house cat. It depends on what breed and type. Maine Coons are one of the biggest cat breeds, so it’s ok if they weigh a bit more. Singapuras are one of the smallest cats, so they’ll probably weigh at bit less. If you have a kitten, you have to be feeding it just right. A kitten that is 4 weeks should weigh 13 ounces. Five weeks are one pound, and so on. By the time the cat is 6 months, the cat should weigh half the size of an average adult cat. There are lots of kitten charts, and lots of ages on them. Well, let’s move on.

How to Fight Overweight Cats

So, you’ve read the last paragraph and is sure that your cat is overweight. Oh no! What do you do? There are many ways to fight fat cats, so I’m gonna tell you the cheapest and simplest way: Try to find a type of food with less fat, and if you can’t just start feeding them less. Make sure your cat gets plenty of exercise from now on. You and your cat will both live long, happy lives if you do this!

Cats Vs. Dogs: The Battle

Here’s a fun fact: In third grade, I loved cats so much I started a debate, one about cats and dogs. Of course, everyone knew I was leading the cat side, and we won! So today you shall finally learn the truth. NOTE: I do not hate dogs, I just dislike them very very very very much.(no offense) Also, this is just an opinion, so please do not hate me.

Why Cats RULE

Just to let you know, expect to finish reading when you’re 80 years old. There are many reasons cats are the best, so I’ll only tell you the main reasons. First, cats are easier to take care of. You don’t have to take them out on walks, and you hardly ever have to bathe them. When I said you don’t have to take cats on walks, it does not mean that cats can’t go on walks. With patience, you could train your cat to take walks. Also, this does not mean cats are lazy. It’s SO ANNOYING when I hear people saying cats are lazy. In the wild, cats need much more energy to hunt, because they don’t live in packs. Therefore, they have to sleep more. This instinct has still stayed strong in pet cats.  And be honest, isn’t it great to sleep? (#IMSOLAZY) So cats aren’t lazy, and if you hear someone say that, go prove them wrong, then please ask them if they have ever studied.(okay, maybe don’t do that) Second, cats aren’t nosy. What I mean to say is, cats won’t bother you for attention every second like dogs do. Sure, they sometimes ask for food, but then that’s only until you actually give them food. Dogs are always trying to get all the attention, without realizing you need space. Once while I was visiting my cousins, I woke up with their dog standing on me! Cats only come when you need them, or you just mentally call them. (ok I was kidding, but sometimes cats really do come!) Last, cats are very interesting. I mean, doesn’t everyone know that a dog’s tail wags when the dog is happy? Isn’t it obvious? Cats can also land on their feet, which is very interesting when you learn about it.

Conclusion

So those are the main reasons that cats rule. Remember, follow what you believe in! That’s all for now, Bye!

Don’t Declaw Your Cat!

Have you ever walked into your living room, and seen your cat scratching your brand-new couch? Have you ever taken one look at this annoying scenario and considered declawing your cat? Well, get prepared, because I’ve come to talk you out of it!

The Horrors!

I know, that just sounded like a reason to immediately get out of here, but after you read this you’ll feel like I’ve saved your cat from becoming miserable! First, it should be obvious, declawing your cat is very cruel. ( No hate to the people who have already declawed their cat) If you thought declawing your cat was just giving them something to make sure their claws never grow back, you’re wrong. Declawing is actually giving your cat surgery to take the top of their toes off, so the part where the claw should be was gone. Not only is it painful, imagine your cat getting lost in the wild. Until it finds you, how will it hunt and defend itself? Also, cats will still try to scratch things, they’re just not as successful. It may hurt to walk, because if you didn’t know, cats walk on their toes.Your cat might not be able to walk at all!  Your cat also may become more shy or aggressive because ( like I said before) of the fact they might not be able to defend itself if attacked. Please get this: YOUR CAT MIGHT NEVER BE THE SAME EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry if you think I’m crazy, but I HATE seeing cats without their precious claws. Cats lose part of themselves just because you want to protect your couch when there are better ways.

How to Help

Unlike most of my articles, there really are only a few ways to help. Don’t declaw your cat, and try to convince others to not declaw their cat too are the main ways to help. It requires little energy and time.  Well, I really hope you don’t declaw your cat!

Big Cats in Danger

Beautiful big cats all over the world are in danger of going extinct, and it’s up to us to help them.

Humans and Big Cats

There are many reasons big cats are going extinct. Poachers killing these animals for their fur is the most common one. Habit loss and poisoning comes close too. But some poachers kill big cats just because the poachers think the cats are evil, kinda like black cats. But of course those people are wrong, they’re just looking for excuses to be able to have a special animal trophy. Some big cats, like mountain cats, are only marked as vulnerable. But others, like tigers, are close to critically endangered. The Zanzibar leopard is also critically endangered, and was once thought as extinct before in a show they discovered a zanzibar leopard. This is very sad, but you can help!

How to Help

Even though you probably wouldn’t be able to convince a poacher to stop killing, or people to stop cutting/intruding forests, you can donate money, start your own donation, volunteer in a zoo with endangered felines, or do many other things, like always. Also, please do not get confused with the Tasmanian tiger, which can be called the Tasmanian wolf too. I don’t know much about canines, but the Tasmanian wolf is probably a canine. Some people say they kill felines because sooner or later the felines will wipe out the human population, but don’t be fooled. Most reasons felines attack is because they feel threatened, they think you’re prey, or they’re just hostile to other creatures. I hope you help them!

Saving the Black Cats

In most places, black cats are shunned because of their appearance. Here I’ll explain why, and how to help.

Legends of the Black Kitty Cats

Way back, cats were worshipped in Ancient Egypt, and soon in other places of the world cats were loved. But then later, when stories of witches and black magic were told, cats weren’t as loved. People made up stories of witches with familiars, which were almost always black cats. So people started killing all black cats in sight, and black cats were known as bad luck. Luckily, after that dark time was over, cats were soon the most famous of all again. But people still made connections with witches and black cats, saying that black cats were actually witches or devils in disguise, because why else were they black if not because of black magic? The truth is that black cats had certain genes that made their fur black, or that they had a pigment called melanism, which makes their fur look black. (But back then people were too stubborn to understand this). Even today, black cats are usually avoided and the last to get adopted, resulting in them getting euthanized.

How to Help

There are many ways to help. The best way is to adopt a black cat if you see one in a shelter, like me. If you can’t do that, try fostering a cat, so at least they won’t get killed, although take note that it will probably take a while to find someone willing to adopt one. If you can’t do any of those two things, then you could contact someone who could, start expressing the joy of black cats in many ways, or start making them seem innocent animals that deserve to get adopted. (Which they are) Well, I hope you decide to help save the lives of many black cats!

Cat Nightmare?

Last time I talked about the cats’ problem of overpopulation, I focused on the whole world. But there’s one place where this problem is working its worst.

The Japanese Cat Islands

Apparently Japan has 11 cat islands. What’s a cat island? It’s an island filled with cats. It’s also a popular tourist attraction for cat lovers. But more than half of all the cats there need medical attention. This problem was first discovered by cat activist Hannah Shaw, also known as Kitten Lady. Yeah, she visited a cat island. Anyways, she noticed that all cats were hurt in some way. Most cats were also not neutered or spayed, so every year the cat populations always grew.  Most kittens had upper respiratory infections. The cats were also injured on the outside, from getting into fight with other cats. Some cats were overweight from being fed too much, others underweight from being ignored. The cats were suffering, and everyone was ignoring it.

How to Help

The best way to help is to start a program helping cats. You could hire veterinarians, do TNR, and get people to adopt the young kittens under fourteen weeks of age. If that’s too much, you could volunteer in the TNR program in one of the cat islands. If you can’t do anything, notify someone who can. The most important thing is that you NEVER euthanize a cat. This is a cruel thing to do and you’ll find you regretted doing that. There’s no going back, all we can do is wait for the cats to die on their own and the cat populations to calm down. Well, I hope you decide to help these poor cats.

World of Cats

If you live on a calm street with other houses, it’s likely that you’ve seen at least one cat around that area. But that cat is part of millions of cats, feral and stray, roaming the  streets. These cats are probably also suffering in many ways, and we have to help.

Problems of Kitty World

Every cat lover should know that a cat’s biggest problem is the fact that they’re overpopulated. Just in America, millions of people own cats. But the cats living outside outnumber pet cats by more than six. The outside cats are almost always suffering different things. Sickness, starvation, and injuries are just the main causes. Now, I know you’re thinking about how proud you are of yourself because you always feed the feral cats living outside. Sorry about this, but you’re actually making it worse. Yes, by feeding the cats you’re taking out the problem of starvation, but…you’re increasing the number of cats. If you’re one of those very busy or just casual people then you’ve probably never thought of TNR. I already wrote about this topic, so be sure to check it out. TNR is just an operation made to the cat so it can’t have kittens or, if male, can’t mate. Along with this the cat is given vaccinations and has their ear tip removed to indicate the cat was neutered. By feeding a cat that’s not neutered you’re just giving the cat resources they needs to reproduce. But, now let’s move on!

 How to Help

The most obvious thing to do is TNR. But, there are other ways. If you don’t have the time or money to do TNR then you could contact a friend that does. If you can’t (or won’t) do any of those things, then at least do this: If you’ve seen that a cat has had kittens then try to put the kittens in a cat carrier and bring them to an animal shelter so they can eventually get adopted, or so you can adopt them yourself properly. But remember, if the cat is more than 14 weeks than it’s too late and the cat won’t be able to be comfortable around people. That means that the cat will either be killed or end up living in the animal shelter. If the cat had kittens and you want to do TNR, when you bring the cat to the hospital also bring the kittens and then explain the situation. Well, hopefully you decide to do something about Princess Purrfect gobbling up food everyday and giving birth to kittens.

Are Cats Loners?…

Most people consider cats loners. But… is that true?

The Truth

No, it’s not really true. But don’t leave yet, I’m not done. I consider cats loners as much as I consider dogs loners. Cats need their space, but that doesn’t mean cats don’t like attention. It’s an instinct. Cats are solitary animals. They almost never see another cat, apart from mating time. When they do meet another cat, the cats either fight or one gets scared away. Same thing goes when cats meet other animals that aren’t prey. The animals that could easily crush cats are usually stayed away from. So when cats encounter humans, domestic or not, it’s not rare that their first thought is run. Even affectionate cats still have their instincts, and sometimes they just need their alone time. But all these cats are domesticated, and need their humans. Even the shy or aggressive ones feel an urge to be with us. In fact, one of my cats called Shadow, is very shy. Yet we have a bond. Every night ( or every time I’m in bed ), Shadow would always jump onto my bed and fall asleep purring with me. Domino is very affectionate, yet even she needs her time alone. But both cats love me, and it’s staying that way.

My Short Conclusion

So now I hope you understand why cats aren’t loners. And remember, be sure to give your cat lot’s of attention, but also give them some privacy, and you’ll both be very happy!
